Distance ed courses
Interested in pursuing distance ed courses or a distance education degree program? There are many reasons why people choose to pursue a higher education through distance education (aka “distance ed”).
Many students are finding that they may prefer the flexibility of online colleges or online courses offered by colleges that have both online and on-campus classes. Distance ed courses also provide the opportunity for working adults (as many of us are) the ability to set aside their own time in their own schedule to complete their Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree.
For example, working a swing shift or overnight shift sometimes doesn’t allow adults to attend courses on-campus, as most evening classes run from 6-9 pm. During that time, they are either already at work, or are travelling to work. Morning classes wouldn’t leave them much time to rest either. So, how can working adults find the time to complete a degree? Attending college through distance ed is the best answer.
Distance ed courses
Distance ed courses are found in many forms. The growing trend is through online colleges and universities. Basically, a student can access a “virtual classroom” through the comfort of their home/office/public library/local internet cafe, receive and submit assignments, and view/listen to lectures. There is also usually an online chat session or bulletin board where students can interact with each other, discuss topics pertaining to the course, and also communicate with their instructor.
However, there are other methods of distance learning, which do include television programs (usually channeled through local public television stations), and then exams which may have to be taken onsite. For those of you who are awake in the wee hours of the morning and find that there are educational shows on PBS having to do with business or foreign language, you can bet that they are distance learning courses. Many community colleges have gone this route in the past, but this method of distance ed is fading to make way for a more technological way of pursuing a higher form of education.
Although many distance ed courses may still require textbooks, which may or may not be included with the cost of tuition, and there are still assignment deadlines that have to be met, the time in which you decide to devote towards your class work is in your hands. It takes a certain type of person to enroll in a distance education program, one with discipline and ability to work on their own, but many people are finding that this is the best choice for them because of the flexibility.
