I’ve recently begun volunteering at an animal shelter, and I have to say it’s been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. To be able to care for homeless animals and find them homes to caring and loving families has been the most uplifting volunteer work I’ve done in a long time. In fact, it has actually made me want to enroll in veterinary assistant courses. I did a bit of research and here’s what I’ve found so far:

Veterinary assistant courses, help to train students on how to help veterinarians with basic medical procedures including performing tests on animals, analyzing results, and maintaining medical records. They interact with pets and their owners, and provide office and medical support to the veterinarians and vet technicians.

There are many online veterinary assistant courses, as well as on-campus programs. These can range from two to four years in length, depending on the degree. Hourly wages for veterinary assistants range from $12-$15/hour depending on experience and education.

While it may be easy to find a job after completing veterinary assistant courses simply based on education, it also takes a true love and respect for animals. A strong-will and a lot of heart is also important, as with any other medical office, you may see a number of injuries or illnesses that may turn the stomach or prove to be fatal in the end. So you may want to take this into consideration when choosing a career in the veterinary field.

What disciplines and majors can I get a degree in from a Life Experience University?

You can get a degree in any discipline or major that you have personal experience in, depending on the life experience university you apply to. Some life experience universities even offer a customizable major option.

What type of experience does a Life Experience University recognize?

Life experience, of course! Seriously though, any experiences you have that have given you knowledge applicable toward the major or discipline you want to earn a degree in. This can include, but isn’t limited to, job experience, on the job training, solitary learning pursuits, hobbies, and traveling experience.

Can a Life Experience University be accredited?

Yes, life experiences can be accredited by certain special organizations. Two of the more widely recognized institutions that accredit life experience universities are the World Online Education Accrediting Commission (WOEAC) and the Board of Online Universities Accreditation (BOUA).
What qualifications do I need for Life Experience University degree programs?

There are no prerequisites for life experience degrees except for your own life experience. No SAT or ACT scores, no prior transcripts. No admissions tests or essays. No placement tests. The only thing that determines whether or not you qualify for a life experience degree is your own experience as evaluated by the institution you wish to obtain your degree from.

What does a typical Life Experience University degree provide?

It depends on the university, but usually they include one or more copies of a transcript, and a diploma, at the minimum. Some universities will also include, or offer for an additional fee, verification or reference letters. Others may have special awards or certificates for those whose degrees qualify for them.

What if I am looking for a High School Diploma, rather than a degree?

Some life experience universities also provide a high school diploma service, typically awarded from an associated school.

Why I got my work experience college degree…

Did you pay your dues? Work your way up the hard way? Me too. I come from a family that values a strong work ethic. When I graduated high school, there was no way I could afford college–I tried, applying for scholarships, federal grants, and so on. But I wasn’t willing to go into debt, so it just wasn’t feasible. I got a job instead. It was entry level but I worked hard and my boss saw it, and soon I was taking on more responsibility, attending training courses, and moving up. When I hit middle management though, the human resources department put their foot down. Company “policy” said any higher level jobs required a bachelor’s degree–and so did any raises. My boss was apologetic, but that was that. When I complained to my friend about how hard work doesn’t pay off the way it used to, she suggested I look into getting a work experience college degree.

What is a work experience college degree?

Some universities have begun to recognized that real-life experience can be equivalent to the knowledge gained in the classroom. Yeah, you and I could have told them that, right? But sometimes in life a piece of paper matters more than experience–to certain people anyway, when it comes to “policy.” That’s where your work experience college degree comes in. A work experience college degree is a degree granted by an online university, in recognition of the hard work you’ve already done. No classes. No exams. Just documentation of your experience. That can be anything from on the job training to the actual challenges you face at work. It can include military training, classes you took before, and your involvement in volunteering, community organizations, or even the study you do on your own.

An online degree in homeland security can open up a challenging — and incredibly rewarding — career path working for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security or a local or state agency.

An online degree in homeland security can prepare you to work in national security, work with hazardous materials, offer disaster relief, emergency medical assistance, or find a job in corrections or law enforcement.

In today’s world, many job candidates can see their resume bumped to the top of the pile with an online degree in homeland security. The degree can be invaluable to nurses, first responders, public administrators, psychologists, political scientists, criminal justice professionals, and translators — just to name a few.

There are any number of degree programs available to someone interested in a homeland security career. Depending on what you choose, you’ll complete coursework in everything from psychology to criminal justice.

Most online degree in homeland security programs also focus on business administration and leadership classes.

How much will you earn with an online degree in homeland security? That’s hard to pinpoint because of the wide array of jobs in all areas of public safety. But average salaries can range from $42,150 for a police officer to nearly $90,000 as a criminal investigator and more for those with leadership jobs at federal, state or local agencies.

The need to know how to protect our homeland was driven home during and after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Because of those attacks and the incidents since, funding for homeland security-related jobs is secure. That means that by helping secure the safety and well-being of your community or nation, you can also provide a secure income for your family.
