Distance Learning Masters Degree: What are your reasons?

The decision to pursue my master’s degree wasn’t an easy one.  I waffled for months… okay, in the interest of full disclosure, I waffled for years. Then I heard about distance learning masters degree programs, and I had a whole new set of options to weigh in on.

Graduate school is no piece of cake.  I know a lot of people who have entered programs to get their masters degree, pretty much because they were looking to make more money, or just because they had an idea that the diploma would come attached to some sort of automatic “get the respect I deserve” package.  And, in truth, your masters degree does come with respectability and can mean making more money… but it’s hardly a “quick n’ easy” way to get those things.

The same is true of a distance learning masters degree.  More convenient in a lot of ways?  Absolutely.  But “easy”? Look, it’s grad school! It’s not supposed to be easy! Sure, there are diploma-mill masters degrees out there that are easy, but they’re not the real thing–and anyone with any sense will know that.

Getting your distance learning masters degree is a great path to take if you take it for the right reasons.  And what are the right reasons?  First, a sincere enjoyment of–even a passion for–your field of study.  Second, your masters fits a career path you have in mind.  And third?  You’re a great researcher, have strong writing skills, love doing both, and feel you have a contribution to make to your field.

If you’re really driven, if you’re going to love all the hectic studying and intensive research just as much as you’ll love the higher paycheck and the status and respct–then getting your distance learning masters degree is a great choice.
